About OmicsLogic – Government City College, Hyderabad Collaboration

The Government City College, Hyderabad, India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pine Biotech – A Big Data Analytics Company that offers training, services and solutions in bioinformatics on the 7th of September 2022.

The collaboration has been made possible as a result of successful efforts by Dr. P. Bala Bhaskar, Principal at Government City College (A), Hyderabad; Mrs. P. Pushpalatha, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Biotechnology, Dr. Kishore Golla, Associate Professor, Dept. of Biotechnology and Ms. Farheen Ayesha Brijees, Ph.D. Student. 

On 14th September 2022, an orientation session was conducted for the students to introduce them to the training objectives, expected learning outcomes, and associated resources they get access to as a part of the training program. A total of 20 sessions were conducted from 21st September 2022 – 26th October 2022

OmicsLogic Learn Portal: Learning Outcomes

During the course of their training, the students received access to the Omics Logic Learn Portal which offers a diverse range of comprehensive and up-to-date online courses on topics ranging from genomics, transcriptomics, metagenomics, and epigenomics to single-cell transcriptomics. 

For those interested to learn about the technical aspects of biomedical data analysis, the portal also offers courses on python, R programming, and machine learning. 

For hands-on analytical experience and practice for bioinformatics education, learners also receive access to the AI-guided and user-friendly T-BioInfo Platform that combines statistical analysis modules into bioinformatics pipelines.

Based on Fig. 1, we can infer that a majority of students (n = 24) had learned points in the range of 0-2000. This was followed by n = 14 and n = 9 students having learned points in the range of 2000-4000 and 4000-6000, respectively. It is interesting to note that there is n = 1 student gaining learn points in the range of 8000-10,000, thereby becoming the student from Government City College, Hyderabad with the highest points on the portal.

Final Examination: Learning Outcomes 

A final examination was conducted for the students on November 3rd, 2022. It consisted of 20 questions based on Course 1: Introduction to Bioinformatics and Course 2: Bytes and Molecules. Each question carries 1 mark and it was mandatory to answer all of them. The time duration given for answering questions were 30 minutes.

As depicted in Fig. 2, the majority of the students (n = 14) achieved a full score i.e., 20 out of 20 points. This was followed by a total of n = 35 students scoring in the range of 10-19 points. Finally, a total of n = 5 students scored in the range of 0-10 points. 

In addition to scoring marks based on the final exam, students were also given 5 marks for feedback submission.  

The following are the top students who have scored the highest total marks based on final examination (total marks = 20) and feedback submission (total marks = 5)

It is interesting to note that the following students also belonged to the top 10 student list with the highest OmicsLogic Learn Points:

Feedback Form Submissions: Learning Outcomes  

In addition to the final exam form, students were also given a feedback form to validate the outcomes of the OmicsLogic Training Program. The feedback form consisted of 7 questions and finally a section for sharing student feedback. We received a total of 52 responses.

Out of the 52 submissions, the highest number of responses were from B.Sc. Biotechnology background (n = 38) while we received n = 14 submissions from M.Sc. Biotechnology students.

As shown in Fig. 4, the majority of the students (n = 27) responded that bioinformatics analysis tools, skills, and resources are “Extremely Important” in their interested field of work. This was followed by n = 25 students responding that it is “Very Important”.

From Fig. 5, it can be understood that the majority of students (n = 15) were “Aware but don’t know much”. This was followed by n = 14 students responding that they are “Knowledgeable”. Finally, almost a similar number of students responded that they were “Very Knowledgeable” (n = 12) or “Extremely Knowledgeable” (n = 11).

In comparison to Fig. 5, we can observe from Fig. 6 that there has been a significant improvement in the student’s understanding of bioinformatics after Omics Logic Training. The majority of students (n = 24) responded that they have become “Very Knowledgeable”. This was followed by n = 16 students responding that they are “Extremely Knowledgeable”. Finally, a minor number of students (n = 11 and n = 1) responded that they are “Knowledgeable” and “Aware but don’t know much” respectively.

From Fig. 7, it can be inferred that a significant number of students (n = 28 and n = 22) found that mentor guidance and team support during the course of student training were “Very helpful” and “Significantly helpful” respectively. Only a minor number of students (n = 2) found it “Somewhat helpful”.

As observed in Fig. 8,  a significant number of students (n = 31 and n = 19) found that an online learning community during the course of student training were “Very helpful” and “Significantly helpful” respectively. Only a minor number of students (n = 2) found it “Somewhat helpful”.

From Fig. 9, we can note that a significant number of students (n = 49) are interested in completing a research project and getting it published in a peer-reviewed journal. Only a minor number of students (n = 3) responded that they are not.

From Fig. 10, it can be observed that a majority of students (n = 34) are interested in completing a 3-month research internship while n = 10 students are interested in completing a 6-month research internship. However, n = 8 students responded that they are not sure
