About Stella Maris College, Chennai
Stella Maris College, Chennai, India is an art and science college that aims to empower young women to face the challenges of life with courage and commitment and to promote a learning community in which all, especially those from less-privileged backgrounds, feel part of the collaborative high-quality educational process which is value-based and leads to holistic growth.
To fulfill this mission, Pine Biotech offered educational training services for the students pursuing their Master’s Degree in Bioinformatics. The training was possible as a result of successful coordination by Ms. Sagaya Jansi R, M.Sc., Ph.D. (Pursuing), Head of Bioinformatics Department, and Ms. Aishwarya S, M.Sc., Ph.D. (Pursuing), Assistant Professor - Bioinformatics Department.
A total of 9 postgraduate students were enrolled for the training for a period of one month from June 2022 to July 2022.
Student Participation By Omics Logic Course
As a part of the training, the students received access to the Omics Logic Learn Portal which offers a diverse range of comprehensive and up-to-date online courses on topics ranging from genomics, transcriptomics, metagenomics, and epigenomics to single-cell transcriptomics. For those interested to learn about the technical aspects of biomedical data analysis, the portal also offers courses on python, R programming, and machine learning.
Figure 1: Student Participation By Omics Logic Courses
After the completion of their training program, as observed in Figure 1, we can see that there were mainly six courses where there was high interest among the students and are as follows: Introduction to Bioinformatics (n = 9); Bytes and Molecules (n = 8); Python Course 1 (n = 3); Genomics (n = 2); R Coding Course 1 (n = 2), and BioML-Machine Learning for Biomedical Data (n = 2).
This was followed by other courses: Biomolecular Data Analysis (n = 1); R Coding Course 2 (n = 1); Single Cell Transcriptomics (n = 1); Transcriptomics (n = 1), and Metagenomics (n = 1).
Student Participation By Omics Logic Example Projects
To help students acquire practical skills beyond the theoretical concepts covered during the coursework, the Omics Logic Learn Portal also offers example projects on oncology, virology, neuroscience, agriculture, and infectious diseases that are sourced from high-impact research publications. For hands-on analytical experience and practice for bioinformatics education, learners also receive access to the AI-guided and user-friendly T-BioInfo platform that combines statistical analysis modules into bioinformatics pipelines.
Figure 2: Student Participation By Omics Logic Example Projects
As observed from Figure 2, there was a significant interest amongst students in the following example projects: Modeling Cancer Precision Medicine (n = 2); TCGA Liver Cancer - Precision Oncology (n = 2), and Ebolavirus: Deadly Mutations (n = 2).
This was followed by other example projects: Breast Cancer: Oncogene Variant Calling (n = 1); Role of High Fat Diet on Obesity (n = 1); Differentially Expressed Genes in Alzheimer (n = 1); Surveillance of SARS-COV-2 VOC (n = 1); Host Response to Malaria Infection (n = 1); Drought stress and resistance in potato (n = 1); Spodoptera frugiperda (fall armyworm) (n = 1); Changing Immune Response in Cancer (n = 1); Patient Derived Xenograft Models (n = 1); EV-D68 and Acute flaccid myelitis in Kids (n = 1); COVID-19 Origin & Pathogenesis of SARS-COV2 (n = 1), and Single Cell RNA-Seq for Lung Cancer (NSCLC) (n = 1).
Omics Logic Learn Points Achieved By Students
Figure 3: Omics Logic Learn Points Achieved By Students
As observed in the Figure 3, there was (n = 1) student achieving learn points in the range of 0 - 2000. This was followed by the highest number of students achieving learn points in the range of 2000 - 4000 (n = 4), followed by 4000 - 6000 (n = 3).
There was no student obtaining any learn points in the category of 6000 - 8000 (n = 0). Finally, the highest points were achieved by a student in the range of 8000 - 10,000 (n = 1).
Student Participation By Omics Logic Achievements
Figure 4: Omics Logic Achievements By Students
A major portion of the students had Omics Logic achievements in the range of 0 - 500 (n = 8). However, there was no student gaining achievements in the range of 500-1000. Finally, n = 1 student had the highest achievement in the range of 1000 - 1500.
