LEARN FROM THE EXPERTS!
Bioinformatics skills are embedded in life sciences and in demand, well-paying careers. This discipline combines data science, statistics, and molecular biology which are often taught as separate topics. As a result, bioinformatics and biomedical data sciences are rarely available for high school students (outside of major biotech hubs) due to the lack of teacher competency, complex bioinformatics tools, big datasets, and the lack of practical exposure. Prof. Sona Vasudevan from Georgetown University, USA explains how we live in a world of data and how information technologies and data science can help extract information from biological data - which is bioinformatics.
Dr. Sona Vasudevan
She also serves as an adjunct senior bioinformatics scientist for Protein Information Resource (PIR) and directs the dual-degree program (MD/MS) in systems medicine, a program she created. Her expertise is in structural biology, structural bioinformatics, homology modeling, protein-ligand interactions, antibody-antigen interactions, drug discovery, and systems medicine.
Dr. Mohit Mazumder
Dr. Mohit Mazumder has over 12 years of research & industry experience. He completed a Masters's in Bioinformatics from Jamia Millia Islamia and a Ph.D. in computational biology & chemistry from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). He is an expert in machine learning in application to biomedical & chemical data with over 40 publications in bioinformatics and numerous award for his scientific research and developing training structures for beginners in bioinformatics and data science.
Dr. R.L. Narayanan
Dr. Raghavendran Lakshminarayanan is an accomplished computational biologist with more than 4 years of research experience in subjects/areas like multi-omics data analysis and data science methods in precision oncology, and protein/DNA structural bioinformatics. With a strong background in Biophysics and Bioinformatics, he earned his Ph.D. in computational biology from the Max-Planck Institute, Germany.
Independent Research Projects
The Bioinformatics fellowship is a structured program that guides students through various areas of Big Data Bioinformatics Research using practical examples. During this program, we go through several high-quality research publications and learn about applications of computational biology in projects these publications describe. This kind of experience allows beginners to try computational biology techniques on public domain data, making it possible to work with large files and extract meaningful information from patient samples, animal models, cell-lines, and microbiota. The program provides support and mentorship, therefore it is an intensive research program involving training tasks, access to our online sessions and a guide on the implementation of learned skills to proposed research ideas.
The research fellowship program is designed to provide support and guidance on the development of an independent research project within a given timeframe (3-6 months). During this time, participants meet on a weekly basis to share their progress and get feedback from the program coordinators. They can also request one-on-one sessions with a mentor on a weekly basis or meet in smaller focus groups.

FEEDBACK FROM THE SUMMER HIGH SCHOOL 2021 PROGRAMS

Natalie Chang
New Rochelle High School
The complete program topics were really interesting. I was able to learn a lot of new things. I was personally not able to give in so much time during and after the sessions for practice and learning. At some points, I felt the flow of the teaching was apt for me to be able to grasp it, especially during hands-on sessions. I look forward to learning more from the resources."

"This program was a great review and exploration into different omics technologies and the field of bioinformatics. I came in only taking a basic Biology course in high school, so while these concepts were all very new to me, I think it was presented well. I liked how everyone was very open to answering all our questions. I liked the hands-on part of the session where we did some work on pymol as well." - Kieran
