Academic-Industry Partnership between REVA University, Bangalore India and Pine Biotech, USA
As students embark on their professional journey with freshly completed degrees, they often wonder how professional life will be different from studies. Many prepare for this moment in advance, exploring possibilities to work in an area of interest through internships and research fellowships during their studies. Reva University recognizes the need to enable students to participate in such meaningful experiences early on, leading to a pursuit of collaborations with industry. As a result, there is a natural fit between REVA University and Pine Biotech, a Big Data Analytics company that is focused on bioinformatics and machine learning for biomedical data. As a result, Pine Biotech will work closely with REVA University faculty, and administration to develop a pipeline for students to get training and apply their bioinformatics skills in research and industry projects as interns and research fellows with the company. This process starts with a program designed to introduce students from all backgrounds to the intersection of biology and data science, we call it Omics Logic.

Getting Started
Are you ready to get started? Then the wait is over, now you can simply register and start working towards your goals. Below you will find directions in 3 simple steps. If you need help, simply reach out to our team who will be happy to assist you along the way.
STEP 1: Register and Get Started
All you need to get started is an account on learn.omicslogic.com.
Once the account is set up, you can complete it by updating your profile picture and a brief statement about your background and goals. If you are not comfortable uploading your own picture, you can upload your university/organization logo or emblem.
Make sure you update your name in the proper format: First and Last Name should be spelled as you want them to show up on your certificates. You can also link your account to social media.
On your profile, you will find access to all of the Omics Logic courses, programs and resources. Once you complete a course, you can access the certificates by clicking on certificate option under profile section.

STEP 2 - Complete Basic Training
To get your starter qualifications, you must learn about the basics of bioinformatics, completing at least 3 basic modules. These will introduce you to the terminology and applications of bioinformatics in healthcare, biotechnology, pharmacy and agriculture.
As you complete each step, lesson or assignment, you will start accumulating points under your profile. The objective is to get to at least 3000 points that will be used as a qualification for you to proceed to the next stage.
To view your points and see what each activity amounts to, simply visit your profile or check the course description. The rule of thumb is that each course adds up to about 600-1000 points: 500 for completing a course, 50 for completing each lesson and 10 for completing an assignment or quiz.

This is an introductory course that covers the topics of big data bioinformatics and its uses in basic research, healthcare, and the biotech and pharmaceutical industries. This course is designed to introduce undergraduate and graduate-level students in biology. Total points: 650

A Beginner's Guide: Bytes and Molecules
Every living cell has its own “hard drive” where it stores bytes of information needed to function and grow. This course is intended for all those interested in understanding how the current revolution in biomedical data impacts biomedical research and human health. Total points: 750

Bioinformatics Research Project Design
In this course, you will learn how to identify a research topic, perform literature review to refine it and find a dataset for your project and translate ideas into an analysis plan that you can execute. After that, you will also learn about project presentation, writing and final submission. Total points: 500
Evaluation and Specialization
After you complete the basics, it is time to decide what you want to specialize in. You can explore various tracks to get familiar with technical skills and research topics in bioinformatics. To continue with training, you can choose between several options, like analysis of special types of data (genomics, transcriptomics, metagenomics, epigenomics, etc.) using the T-BioInfo platform, get training in data science using R and Python, or specialize in a topic like oncology, neuroscience or agriculture. Each track is available as a monthly subscription or mentor-guided program with weekly sessions that you can attend online.

Specialized Courses & Projects (10,000-30,000 POINTS)
OmicsLogic specialized courses & projects are designed for a more in-depth review and preparation for independent research. These specialized example projects will help you apply the concepts & methodologies learnt in the course work to a real life research problem. This will help you propose your own research problem and come up with your own project design.
Certification
After you complete the training and specialization, you are expected to have over 10,000 points on your profile. By this time, you should also have the necessary skills to think critically about various types of data, identify important research questions that can be answered with bioinformatics and have the necessary skills to analyze data, finding answers. As a valued expert, you can now work with our team and faculty from various research fields to participate in a research project!
STEP 3 - Qualification Exam
After your technical qualification, our team and faculty of Reva University will offer you a qualification exam to test your proficiency in bioinformatics and evaluate your critical thinking skills. After completing this step, you will be able to join the Research Fellowship Program to work with a mentor on a research project.
As a part of this review, faculty would be reviewing your OmicsLogic Learn profile and examination results. After successful review, each student will be assigned with a research topics based on their interest and available faculty projects. Together with an expert mentor, student groups will complete a project within several months (3 or 6 months commitment options). At the end, top projects will be selected for publication, poster presentations and expert review from academia and industry partners.

STEP 4 - RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP (RF)
The research fellowship program is designed to provide support and guidance on the development of an independent research project within a given timeframe (2-3-6 months). The eligibility criteria to join the research fellowship program is 10,000 points on learn omicslogic. During the RF program, participants meet on a weekly basis to share their progress and get feedback from the program coordinators. They can also request one-on-one sessions with a mentor on a weekly basis or meet in smaller focus groups.
The Bioinformatics fellowship is a structured program that guides students through various areas of Big Data Bioinformatics Research using practical examples to develop a Bioinformatics Project using Big Data.
Graduation
At the end of the process, you are guaranteed to have excellent outcomes that will make you stand out from the crowd and advance your skills in a meaningful way. Not only will you have gained training, experience and exposure to the world of computational biology, you will have a project that you can show to a potential employer or entry interview for a research position. While many achieve this stage only in advanced degrees after many years of struggling, you will be able to achieve one of the following outcomes in a short time with the help of this streamlined asynchronous training.
Outcome 1 - Systematic Literature Review
The literature review surveys scholarly articles, books, and other sources relevant to a particular area of research. The review should enumerate, describe, summarize, objectively evaluate and clarify this previous research. Knowing how to perform a comprehensive and systematic review is important in many areas, both in academia and industry. Completing a project using literature review might include:
- reviewing current research and identifying unanswered questions
- finding datasets to use for exploratory analysis and generate a hypothesis
- reviewing methods applied to answer specific questions

Outcome 2 - Presenting a Poster for Feedback
After completing a research project and submitting it on the Omics Logic portal, you can get expert feedback and showcase your project in poster competitions and the Omics Research Symposium. This outcome provides you with exposure and allows you to showcase your achievements to an international community of experts that will help you revise and polish a project for publication or inclusion in your resume. Benefits of a research project include:
- demonstration of a completed research undertaking
- explanation of methods in the context of a project
- experience inter-disciplinary collaboration in a research area
Outcome 3 - Publishing a Research Article
Once your research project is complete and submitted on the portal, a research fellow can then proceed with publishing their work in scientific journals. To achieve this step, it typically requires a longer timeframe, but will be possible with an Omics Logic Mentor that will guide the research fellow through this process. The drafts will be reviewed for editing and feedback to improve the manuscript. The benefits of publishing a peer-reviewed research article include:
- Exposure in journals dedicated to a specific research domain
- Real research experience required in many academic positions
- Novel findings and critical review by the academic community
